Help with the CaSIL Website Tools

I need Help with:

  •  (Mirrors Tab)
  •  (More Info Tab)
  •  (Image Previews)

I have a Question:

  • Why is my browser not displaying correctly?
The 'Mirror' Tab

The CaSIL website is mirrored by several different supporting organizations. Because the CaSIL library is so large organizations help mirror only parts of CaSIL. This causes different pages on CaSIL to be mirrored by different sites.

The CaSIL mirror tool allows you to see the operational status of any mirror. The first column in the table is the website URL. The second is the current condition of that URL. This is status is given in real time but due to the nature of the Internet can never be 100% accurate.

The status conditions are:

  • OK - The mirror site is up and operational
  • Unknown - The status could not be determined. This is most likely cause by a timeout. At which point this mirror is not advised for it may be already running at max capacity.
  • Down - The mirror is offline or has returned an invalid HTTP status code.

There is also a small table on the bottom of the left column of the CaSIL website that displays a truncated version of the status information. The status is indicated by a colored circle (green, yellow, or red) and the site name is given. Note, the link will take you to your currently displayed page on that mirror even though the full URL is not shown.

The 'More Info' Tab

Most directories in CaSIL have a README file associated with them. This file supplies information about the directories content. This information used to be displayed before the file listings and was always shown. Due to the length of some of these README's the text has now been placed inside the info tab. This allows for faster access of files for you no longer have to scroll past all that information if you already know what you want. Directories without a README file have grayed out info tabs.

Some info tabs contain maps that allow for easier navigation. These maps may be clicked on for navigation or to directly download a file. We are currently in the process of transferring these static maps to the more dynamic map preview widget that can currently be found in the remote_sensing -> naip_2005 -> usda_file_archive section. For information on this image preview widget please click the link to the left.

The Image Previews

In some parts of CaSIL (currently only sections in remote_sensing-> naip_2005 -> usda_file_archive NAIP imagery ) Image files are identified with an image preview icon . These images can be previewed directly from the browser by clicking this icon. The viewer will popup in your browser window and display the image selected. You may then navigate around in the viewer if you wish.

Image Preview Navigation Commands and Controls:

  • Up Arrow Icon - moves the map north
  • Down Arrow Icon - moves the map south
  • Left Arrow Icon - moves the map east
  • Right Arrow Icon - moves the map west
  • Plus Icon - Zoom In
  • Minus Icon - Zoom Out
  • World Icon (between + and - ) - Show all of California
  • Double Click - will zoom in on that area of the map
  • Shift + Left Click and Drag - Hold down the shift key and click the left mouse button. Drag the mouse across an area you wish to zoom in on (a red box will be drawn over this area). Release shift and the left mouse button and the map will zoom in on the selected area.
  • Mouse Scroll Wheel - Scroll wheel forward zooms in and scroll wheel backward scrolls out.

Notes About the Viewer:

  • Scroll Wheel in IE - The scroll wheel will not move the webpage while the viewer is open, but rather zoom in and out the map viewer even while the mouse is outside of the widget.
  • Due to the size of the NAIP dataset when you zoom far enough out, the imagery shown will switch from NAIP to LANDSAT. This is to keep a reasonable response time for image loading.
  • Some images will seem to load much faster than others. We are caching images once they are generated, but once again due to the size of the NAIP dataset we have not pre generated all possible images for all possible zoom levels. If and image does not show up right away please be patient.
  • Currently we are developing a WFS layer for the viewer. This will allow you to view the bounding box of all images within the viewer as well as get information about that image. We hope to bring you this feature in the near future.
  • Image Previews do not work in Opera.

This widget is a modified version of OpenLayers

Why is my brower not displaying correctly?

If you are experiencing display problems with the CaSIL website your browser may not be supported. Currently the CaSIL website tools are supported in FireFox 1.5+ and Internet Explorer 6+. While most CaSIL functionality is supported in Opera 9.1+, the image preview widget is not supported. JavaScript must been enabled for the CaSIL tools to work. If you have trouble or are experiencing technical issues related to any of the CaSIL tools, please feel free to e-mail casil@gis.ca.gov with your problem, brower and browser version number.

It is always recommended to be running the latest version of your browser:

  • To download the latest version of FireFox Click Here
  • To update Internet Explorer run Windows update on your PC.
